What are SAP Calculations and are they needed for extensions?
SAP stands for ‘Standard Assessment Procedure’ and is the government’s method for calculating the energy performance of dwellings.
In the case of extensions, SAP calculations, also known as heat loss calculations, are used to assess the energy efficiency of a house extension and determine if it complies with Building Regulations.
A SAP Calculations for an Extension is only needed when the glazing area of the extension is more than 25% of the new floor area. This means large extensions with very little glazing will not need an SAP Calculation, but those with more glazing will.
SAP calculations compare the carbon emissions of the existing house and proposed extension (Actual Dwelling) to the existing house plus a notional extension (Notional Dwelling). Moreover, the notional extension would only have the 25% glazing allowance. To demonstrate compliance, the carbon emissions of the Actual Dwelling must be equal to or lower than the Notional Dwelling.
How Is Compliance with Part L Demonstrated?
You can demonstrate compliance with Part L using several methods; however, the most common SAP calculations for extensions are as follows:
- Area-Weighted U-Value Calculation: Balancing overall thermal performance if some areas don’t meet individual U-value targets.
- Full SAP Calculation: This is typically required for large-glazed extensions and the go-to if you cannot demonstrate compliance under the Area Weighted U Value Calculation. This method offers more flexibility.
An experienced SAP assessor will guide you on the best approach based on your project’s specifications.
How quickly can I have my SAP Calculations
It depends on the size of your property however; on average it takes about 3 days to complete. We will require a full set of plans and building details to start the process.
